Art For Animals’ Sake 2017

I am participating in the upcoming exhibition Art For Animals’ Sake 2017
Fundraising Exhibition
6 – 15 October Amsterdam
www.art-for-animals-sake.com
Art For Animals’ Sake is an initiative of 2 Dutch artists, who wish to contribute to the well-being of animals by high quality contemporary art, starting with a fundraising art exhibition from 6 – 15 October 2017. We have selected 100 talented, either well-known or emerging Dutch and International artists, who are enthusiastic to participate in this fundraising exhibition in support of animal rights organizations. This event will contain art, lectures, music and poetry.
After careful consideration, we have chosen as beneficiaries the following organizations, because of their outstanding and effective striving for animal wellbeing:

House Of Animals, who is also so kind to host our exhibition
Eyesonanimals.nl
Animalrights.nl
Wingsforanimals.nl
Of every sold piece of art, the artist will donate half of the revenue (or more) to the fund. The collected money will be split among the 4 organizations above mentioned.
MISSION STATEMENT
The world in which animals live today is of much growing concern.
New facts come to light each day about abuse in the biotech industry and other sectors where animal testing is prevalent—all in the name of human progress. At the same time, there is a growing awareness about the strong link between animal welfare and human well-being. Humans are slowly coming to know animals as they really are, and not just as resources to be exploited.
This exhibition in Amsterdam envisions, among other things, a future in which the animal and human worlds are united in common interest and collective welfare. It shows animals as our equals—with their own wills, purposes, and personalities—and not as mere victims on the path to human consumption.
Raising awareness of animal abuse and giving aid to abused animals is critical. We want to contribute to organizations that help prevent animal cruelty.  Therefore, all proceeds from Art For Animals’ Sake will go to those organizations that help animals in need. We have asked all artists to use only materials that do not include animal byproducts.

Makara and Ikuchi

These two vases/sculptures that I call the Makara and Ikuchi vases are specially made for the project ‘Kunstkast’ (‘Art cabinet’), initiated by foundation ‘Op Visite’ from Delft. They have designed two Art cabinets with each containing 5 works of Art. The ‘Kunst kast’ is going to travel around different locations, mostly care institutions, in combination with an art education program.

An (my) artwork in your custom-made suit

My drawings of sea creatures are used inside custom-made suits by GMraven.

GMraven is a company based in Utrecht, The Netherlands dedicated to providing high quality custom-made clothing for men.
While you can buy ordinary suits everywhere these days, we will go that extra mile to ensure the products you buy with us are one of a kind, high quality and outfitted with tiny details that difference the ordinary from the extraordinary.
GMraven makes art wearable. We believe that art should not be just one piece of artwork at one place but a dynamic creation, carried all over the world. This wouldn’t be possible without talented artists who provide us with their art. See below for an overview of the art and artists GMraven works with. Please keep in mind that with our measured suits there is always the possibility to make something of your own! We can create whatever your mind can imagine.

Ménagerie des Monstres

Solo exhibition Pepijn van den Nieuwendijk | Ménagerie des Monstres

Preview, Friday May 19, 2017 (5 PM – 7 PM)

Welcome to Pepijn van den Nieuwendijk’s imaginative ‘Cirque de Pepin’!
Pepijn van den Nieuwendijk exhibited his work earlier in Japan, Singapore and China. In China, he learned the craft of ceramics during several residences. In Rotterdam, he is particularly famous for his beautiful contribution to the sculpture ‘Ode to Marten Toonder’, which after a renovation has recently been restored and returned to her old familiar spot on Blaak. Van den Nieuwendijk also exhibited in several museums, including Museum Prinsenhof in Delft.

In his solo show Ménagerie des Monstres his love for fairy tales, old stories, historical facts and mythology is clearly present. A Menagerie is a collection of wild and exotic animals kept in captivity, the precursor of the modern zoo. The concept of the menagerie originated in France of the seventeenth century. Initially, the word referred to a household, but later it was referred to as an aristocratic or royal animal collection. The Encyclopédie Méthodique of 1782 defines a menagerie as a “establishment of luxury and curiosity.” Later, the concept of the menagerie also concerned traveling animal collections that exhibited wild animals at trade shows in Europe and the American continent.
An exhibition full of baroque beauty with a surrealistic wink.

– Friday 19th May during the preview at 17.00 – 19.00 (Pepijn van den Nieuwendijk present)
– Thursday 25th May to Sunday 28th of May during Route du Nord (specific times will follow)
– Wednesday 31 May to Sunday 4 June at Poetry International (specific times will follow)
– By appointment via info@untitled2011.com

– Donderdag 25 mei t/m zondag 28 mei tijdens Route du Nord (specifieke tijden komen z.s.m.)
– Woensdag 31 mei t/m zondag 4 juni tijdens Poetry International (specifieke tijden komen z.s.m.)

– Op afspraak via info@untitled2011.com

A Mountain of shards

So cool for an artist working with ceramics (like myself) to discover a field, somewhere between Den Haag, Delft and Zoetermeer, literally scattered with ceramic shards belonging to a Delftware pottery (or potteries) dating to the 17th and 18th century. Shards of saggers (a protective fireclay box enclosing ceramic ware while it is being fired), large ceramic kiln stilts (triangles to support plates while being fired), and many shards of biscuit fired (first firing without glaze) Delftware faience and Majolica. And ofcourse I found blue and white Delftware shards next to other ceramics like clay pipes, German stoneware and one Chinese porcelain export ware bottom piece with an unknown makers mark. Hope to find more soon.

Chaste turn (Kuisbeurt)

Oh, it's a dirty job but someones gotta do it (and a dangerous one too)… but we care a lot.
Marten Toonder Monument (Rotterdam 2002) chaste turn.
Yellow for gold, and gluing thin gold foil, with Florentine Haak at Zuliani in the village of Zoetermeer.

Never heard of the term "chaste turn" before, but it was the translation I got for the Dutch word "Kuisbeurt" (cleaning something). But actually it is not really a Dutch word but Belgian.

Pikachu in blue and white

I made this small sculpture already some months ago. My kids are Pokémon fans, not the GO but the trading card game. They said I should make a Pikachu sculpture in honour of their favorite character, I said I would, and after this promise, I was bound to do it.... Now the hype is more or less over (or at least that’s what I think, correct me if I'm wrong), it has become a historical artefact.

For Real?!

A few of my works are exhibited with Rotterdam based gallery Untitled this coming weekend, 19-22 January 2017 at the For Real Artfair in Amsterdam, formerly known as Realisme.
Why the fair name has been changed from the pretty good name 'Realisme' to the hip English 'For Real' is a mystery to me.
But anyway, I am very pleased to be present at this fair because it is known as the place to be for figurative art, and well... my work is pretty figurative.
